About Sorcha Barr-Deneen

Sorcha is a flautist and teacher living outside Perth, Western Australia. She leads masterclasses, adjudicates competitions and auditions, and performs throughout the community. She has played Flute and Piccolo with the  Steamboat Symphony Orchestra since 2019. She founded the Kitsap Flute Choir in 2024 and currently plays with and assistant conducts the Tutti Flute Ensemble

Sorcha earned her Master of Music degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Bachelor of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Additionally, she earned a Certificate in Arts Management from the University of California, Irvine.

At UIUC, Sorcha studied with  Dr. Jonathan Keeble and performed as a member of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Modern Ensemble, and the Illinois Wind Symphony. In 2018, Sorcha performed on tour with the Illinois Wind Symphony for the university’s sesquicentennial celebration, Gathering. The ensemble performed in Chicago’s Symphony Center and New York’s Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, premiering the tour’s titular work by Dominick DiOrio.

Sorcha is also a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder with degrees in Flute Performance and Germanic Studies. Sorcha studied with Hideko Amano before moving to Boulder, CO to study with  Christina Jennings.

While in Colorado, Sorcha performed in Pendulum New Music Concerts, premiering new works by young composers, most significantly  Dr. Sara Corry, with whom Sorcha premiered Nepenthes in New York City. Sorcha performed throughout the community, including a duo recital with Dr. Corry at the Stanley Hotel, and was a youth mentor with the Colorado Young Sinfonia.

Sorcha was featured the Introductions Program of Chicago’s Classical Music Station, 98.7 WFMT for a solo performance and interview in 2012 and performed Mozart’s Concerto in D Major with the Oistrach Symphony Orchestra and the Neuqua Valley Symphony Orchestra the same year. Sorcha has placed in competitions by the Chicago Flute Club, Society of American Musicians, Colorado Flute Association, DePaul Concerto Competition and the Walgreens National Concerto Competition.

Sorcha has performed in masterclasses for renowned flutists William Bennett, Paula Robison, Lorna McGhee, Alberto Almarza, Carol Wincenc, Jim Walker, Aleksandr Haskin, and Patricia George, and the entire flute section of the Minnesota Orchestra.

Kitsap Flute Choir

Sorcha founded the Kitsap Flute Choir with Diane Layton in Washington in 2024. Open to intermediate and advanced flutists of all ages, providing low-stress and high-achieving performance experiences.
